After Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), narrowly escaped a road accident, her party raised concerns about the security measures in place for the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister. PDP leader Naeem Akhtar pointed out serious security lapses, especially in the management of road clearances for Mufti’s protected vehicles during the incident. Two people, including a security personnel, were injured in the accident.
Akhtar highlighted that the delay in arranging an alternative car for Mufti, a standard part of escort duty, was deeply troubling and showcased a serious lack of preparedness. He emphasized that security protocols, including the withdrawal of Mufti’s spare car, demand immediate attention and clarification from the authorities.
PDP General Secretary Mehboob Beg expressed deep concern over the inadequate management of Mufti’s travel convoy. He stressed the need for a thorough examination of the incident, considering the potential risks to the security of a former chief minister. Beg also criticized the compromised security detail, emphasizing that it not only jeopardizes the safety of individuals but raises questions about the broader commitment to the security and stability of the region.
Beg called for immediate attention and clarification from the authorities to ensure the safety and security of public leaders. He stated that the incident involving Mufti highlights the necessity for a reevaluation and reinforcement of security measures for all mainstream political leaders in Kashmir, given the region’s turbulent history and the vulnerability of leaders to targeted attacks.
